Last weekend, I was a judge at the Fairy Festival at the McKee Botanical Gardens, where children dressed up as fairies and pirates. In one section of the garden, children could make fairy houses. They used twigs, and bark, and whatever else had been collected by the garden’s staff. This Fairy Estate had a prime real estate location, next to the river. As human beings, we have a profound need for a connection to Nature, and yet many people suffer from Nature-Deficit Disorder. There is an amazing book, LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS, by Richard Louv, which talks about this issue, especially as it relates to children. I feel this is an absolute must read book for any parent.
