An Original Felix The Cat Doll

ImageI recently was chosen by a cat to be his owner.  He was in the neighborhood for months and it took a long time for him to trust me.  Now he is my outdoor cat.  My garage is his oceanside beach bungalow.  I named him Felix, since I loved the cartoon Felix The Cat when I was a child. He is a pure delight, and for years I was allergic to cats!  Now I seem to be able to pet him without sneezing.  My friend in NH has an original Felix the Cat doll.  Quite a classic critter, eh?

This man is from Jamaica.  He has a little girl named Charity. Last week he came to my house to trim my palm trees, and I was asking him about his little girl.  I gave him the WIGGENS LEARNS HIS MANNERS book, and signed it to his daughter.

For over a decade, I worked with TAKASHIMAYA, the most amazingly exquisite department store in Japan.  At one point they asked me to draw a bird watching platypus.  Here it is!

ImageWhen I was in my twenties, I lived and worked in Boston.  I was hired by a radio station to do a banner for their environmental concert series, held at the big downtown train station.  Today I came across this sketch of the banner, and thought about my time in that city.  This image was to represent all creatures getting along.  I think we are all still hoping for more of that feeling, especially amongst human animals.

Owl In Flight

ImageThe owl can turn its head all the way around so they can see everything….thus, they are associated with wisdom.  I just came back from a week of teaching at the Rancho La Puerta spa in Tecate, Mexico.  The Ranch has amazing presenters, filled with wisdom, and I am honored to be one of them.  The writer, Irene Borger, was teaching last week and she asked an interesting question, “What are you doing when you lose track of time?”  She suggested making a list of who feeds your soul.  It’s a worthwhile thing to do.

HEY HEY FOR THE MOOGEES!

People say they are moving around! Yes they are.  On November 13, 2012 THE MOOGEES MOVE HOUSE comes out.  I wrote and illustrated this book when I was 23. It has taken me a long long time to get it published.  My editor at Candlewick Press, Karen Lotz, saw it back in the mid 80’s and loved it.  She always wanted to publish it, and sometimes it is just a matter of timing.

Well, the time is now upon us for their debut into the world. The MOOGEES can’t wait to move into your house, where they promise to make you laugh.
