It’s a good thing Leslie McGuirk refused to believe it when people kept telling her she didn’t have a creative bone in her body. Something inside told her that one day she would prove them wrong.

She did, and in a big way.

To date Leslie has written and illustrated more than a dozen children’s books that feature characters instilled with their creator’s quirky sense of humor. More than two million copies have had their pages turned by tiny fingers around the world.

Takashimaya, a high-end department store chain in Japan, became so enamored with Leslie’s designs after reading about her in Glamour magazine that they have devoted entire sections to her private collection of more than 800 products, consisting of nature-based images inspired by her work as a global research volunteer for Earthwatch. Leslie’s bright and bold designs can also be seen on the carpeting, fabrics and wallpaper at the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel.

When If Rocks Could Sing, a beach-y twist on an alphabet book, was published last year it was an instant success and Leslie delights in showing off the A- to Z-shaped rocks and their tiny accessories that took 10 years to find. To add to the number of projects she juggles is teaching a workshop called “The Quest for Inspiration” at Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. It’s a passion of hers and the reason is personal.

As co-owner of the elegant Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City, Alex von Bidder has seen his share of manners on display — both good and bad. He drew on that experience to write “Wiggens Learns His Manners at the Four Seasons,” a children’s book on being charming and well-mannered.

He and Martha chatted about the book and the Four Seasons Restaurant.

“If Rocks Could Sing” – The Wall Street Journal review

“If Rocks Could Sing” – The Wall Street Journal review

on June 11, 2011

“It took Leslie McGuirk more than a decade of beachcombing in Florida to collect the curious pebbles and stones photographed for “If Rocks Could Sing” (Tricycle/Random House, 48 pages, $15.99), an endearing “discovered alphabet” for young children.

Every letter represented here, and every object described—N for nose, for instance—comes in the form of a stone that has been naturally shaped by wind and water and time. Even the book’s title is spelled out in curving and perforated rocks decorated with seaweed.

The effect is surprisingly captivating. “B is for bird,” we read, and there, tucked into a nest beside a speckled egg, sits a rock that seems to have a beak. On the next page, “C is for couch potato” gives us a spud-shaped object reclining on a pink satin chaise longue. There is as much wit here as there is potential pedagogy: The rock that is used to show “O is for ouch!” looks as though it is shouting and wincing at the same time; the slab of “toast” used to illustrate the letter T so nearly resembles whole-grain bread that you can imagine yourself biting into it. That would certainly bring on shouting and wincing.”

IF ROCKS COULD SING A Discovered Alphabet by Leslie McGuirk

On a stretch of Florida seashore, nature has revealed itself to Leslie McGuirk in a way that can only be called astonishing. There, she has found rocks in the shape of each letter of the alphabet, and over many years she has also persistently collected rocks resembling objects that begin with each letter. Now Leslie is sharing her unique collection with the world.

A is for Addition, and there are the rocks in the shape of real numbers; B is for Bird, and there is a bird rock on a nest with an egg; and G is for Ghosts, and there is a host of rocks that look like ghosts! Children and adults alike will pore over these fascinating rocks and will be inspired to collect their own.

LESLIE MCGUIRK is the author-illustrator of many children’s books, including the Tucker Series, Pip the Penguin books, and Wiggens Learns His Manners at the Four Seasons. As a child, she wanted to be a game warden in Africa. Instead, she grew up to become and author and illustrator whose favorite topics are the animals and natural world she loves so much
